The Nilgiris : In the World Environment Day celebration at the Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Regional Centre, Udhagamandalam, the Chief Scientist, Dr. Manivannan stated that the water resources in Nilgiris is deeply exploited.

"With almost 96 percent of the farmers using pesticides for farming, 22 percent of the trees are being cut down for construction of buildings, and the hill station is thus severely affected with landslides and erosion even when there are just light rains," he added.

Dr. Manivannan also explained that Nilgiris is a very important stretch of the Western ghats and the rains in this region are imperative for farming in regions like Erode, Tiruppur and Coimbatore. The increasing levels of soil erosion, landslides and widespread wildfires this year have all been responsible for the slow destruction of the Nilgiris belt.
